What bites you here

Infection develops later, usually after two or three days, and gets worse rather than better. The signs are increasing pain rather than itch, spreading redness, warmth, pus and sometimes fever.
Scratching is what turns an itchy bite into an infected one, and in this humidity that transition happens fast. Climbers make it worse by scratching with chalky hands and then taping over it.
Ticks need removing properly
Grip the tick as close to the skin as possible with fine tweezers and pull straight out with steady pressure.
Do not twist, and do not burn it, smother it in oil, or apply alcohol first. All of those make the tick regurgitate into the wound, which is the opposite of what you want.
Wash the area afterwards and watch it for two weeks. Come in if a spreading circular rash develops, or if you get fever, headache or joint aches. If the head is left in, or you are not confident removing it, we will do it.
What relieves the itch
Antihistamine tablets work better than creams for multiple bites, and are most useful taken at night when itching peaks. A steroid cream settles individual inflamed bites. Cool compresses help.
Do not scratch. Keeping nails short and covering bites with a light dressing overnight breaks the cycle more effectively than willpower. Avoid the strong topical anaesthetic sprays sold in tourist shops, which frequently cause a contact reaction on top of the bite.
When to be seen
Come in if there is:
- Spreading redness, or a red streak running up the limb
- A bite increasingly painful after day two
- Pus, or a bite that has become an abscess
- Fever after being bitten
- A centipede or scorpion sting, which can be severely painful
- Widespread hives, facial swelling or any breathing difficulty
Breathing difficulty or facial swelling after a sting is an allergic reaction and is an emergency. A bite that becomes a hot, spreading red area is cellulitis and needs antibiotics the same day.
Not getting bitten
Repellent is the main thing, and the details matter more than the brand. DEET at 20 to 50 percent or picaridin at 20 percent both work. Apply to exposed skin after sunscreen, not before, and reapply after swimming and heavy sweating.
Timing is where people go wrong. The mosquito that carries dengue bites during the day, so evening-only application misses the actual risk. Sandflies are worst at dusk and bite around the ankles, which is why bites cluster there after sunset drinks on the sand.
A fan helps considerably, since mosquitoes are weak fliers, and a net is worth using in an open bungalow. Empty standing water nearby — these mosquitoes breed in remarkably small volumes and rarely travel far. If you are getting rows of bites overnight and nobody else in the room is, check the mattress seams for bed bugs rather than reaching for more repellent.
