Jellyfish sting treatment in Railay
A sudden burning line across the arm or leg while swimming, then a raised welt in the shape of a tentacle. Jellyfish are a fact of life along the Andaman coast and stings rise during the monsoon months. Jellyfish sting treatment in Railay is mostly about the first few minutes — and not doing several widely recommended things that make it worse.
What to do immediately
In order:
- Get out of the water
- Rinse generously with vinegar for at least thirty seconds if any is available
- If there is no vinegar, rinse with sea water
- Remove tentacles with tweezers or a gloved hand, never bare fingers
- Immerse in hot water, as hot as tolerable without scalding, for twenty to forty-five minutes
- Take paracetamol or ibuprofen for the pain
Hot water immersion is the most effective pain relief for most stings, because the venom proteins break down with heat. It sounds unlikely and it works.
What not to do
Several standard beach remedies actively make things worse by triggering stinging cells sitting on the skin that have not yet fired:
- Do not rinse with fresh water — the change in salt concentration fires the remaining cells
- Do not rub with sand or a towel
- Do not apply ice directly
- Do not use alcohol or spirits
- Do not use urine, which is neither sterile nor helpful
Fresh water is the most common mistake by a distance, because the instinct after any beach injury is to head for the shower.
Box jellyfish — the serious one
Most stings here are painful and not dangerous. Box jellyfish are a different matter and have caused deaths in Thai waters, including along the Andaman coast.
The warning signs are severe immediate pain, a distinctive ladder-patterned welt, and rapid deterioration — difficulty breathing, chest pain, collapse or loss of consciousness.
Call 1669 immediately, douse liberally with vinegar, and keep the person still, because movement circulates venom. Vinegar is kept at many beaches for exactly this reason and is worth locating before you swim rather than after. When to come to the clinic
Come in the same day if there is:
- Pain not settling after hot water and painkillers
- A large sting, or one across the face, eyes or genitals
- Blistering or broken skin
- A sting in a young child
- Any spreading rash, swelling or feeling generally unwell
- Redness spreading around the area after a day or two

Afterwards, and avoiding the next one
Welts frequently itch for one to two weeks and some leave darker marks for months. Antihistamines help the itch, and keeping the area out of the sun reduces long-term discolouration substantially.
Broken skin from a sting infects readily in tropical water, so watch for spreading redness — see cellulitis. Stings are commonest in the monsoon months and after onshore winds. A rash vest or dive skin removes most of the risk while snorkelling, and swimming where there are other people rather than alone off a quiet stretch is sensible on a peninsula with no lifeguards.
If the reaction is more general than local — hives across the body, facial swelling, wheeze — treat it as an allergic reaction and get help urgently.
Stings in children
Children get stung more often, because they spend longer in shallow water where tentacle fragments collect, and they receive a larger dose relative to body weight from the same contact.
That is why a sting which would be merely painful for an adult can make a small child systemically unwell. Any sting in a young child covering a large area, or followed by vomiting, drowsiness or distress out of proportion to the mark, should be seen the same day.
Practically: keep vinegar in the beach bag during monsoon season, get the child out and calm before doing anything else, and do not let them rub the area. Hot water immersion works just as well for children, but test the temperature on your own skin first — a distressed child cannot reliably tell you it is too hot, and a scald on top of a sting is a genuinely bad outcome.
