STD Testing in Railay
Railay is small, the bars at Railay East and Tonsai are sociable, and the season brings the same crowd back year after year. If something happened and you have been turning it over since, the useful next step is a test rather than another week of reading forums at two in the morning. STD testing in Railay is private, quick, and does not involve a boat to the mainland or explaining yourself to anyone.
What we test for
A standard screen covers the infections that actually matter:
- HIV — see HIV testing for the rapid option
- Syphilis
- Chlamydia and gonorrhoea
- Hepatitis B and C
- Herpes, where there are symptoms to swab
Depending on the exposure, testing may use blood, a urine sample or a swab. The nurse will tell you which tests are actually indicated rather than running the full panel by default and charging you for it.
Timing — the part people get wrong
Testing too early produces a negative that means very little, and that false reassurance is the most common problem we see. Every infection has a window period:
- HIV: a fourth-generation test is reliable from about 4 weeks, conclusive at 12
- Chlamydia and gonorrhoea: about 1 to 2 weeks
- Syphilis: 3 to 6 weeks
- Hepatitis B and C: 6 weeks to 3 months
If the exposure was very recent we will still test, and you will be told clearly what that result can and cannot rule out, and exactly when to repeat it. A baseline now is genuinely useful as long as you understand what it is.
If the exposure was within 72 hours
This changes the priority completely, and it is the reason not to wait for morning or for a convenient boat.
HIV can often be prevented after exposure with PEP, a course of medication that must start within 72 hours and works considerably better the earlier it begins. Do not wait for a test result to decide — a test now tells you about your status weeks ago, not about the exposure you are worried about.
If there is a real risk, come in immediately and ask about PEP and PrEP. Outside clinic hours, message us rather than waiting until morning; the clock matters more than the convenience.
Symptoms worth getting checked
Many sexually transmitted infections cause no symptoms at all, which is precisely why screening exists rather than waiting to feel unwell.
When symptoms do appear, the common ones are burning on passing urine, unusual discharge, sores or ulcers, itching, an unexplained rash, or pain in the lower abdomen or testicles.
Several of these have other causes entirely. Burning on urination is frequently a urinary tract infection, and an unexplained rash is often just heat or fungal rash in this climate. Testing sorts out which, and treating the wrong one wastes days.
Privacy on a very small peninsula
Railay is a community of a few hundred people in season and everyone drinks in the same three bars, which makes discretion a genuine concern rather than a formality.
Results are given to you and to nobody else. Nothing is reported to your resort, your employer, your climbing partner, your insurer or your embassy. You may use a first name at reception and a passport is not required.
If you would rather not be seen walking into a clinic at all, a doctor resort visit can take samples in your room. Rapid tests give an answer during the visit; laboratory tests come back in one to three days and can be sent by message rather than requiring a second trip.
Treatment, and telling a partner
If anything is positive, treatment usually starts the same day, and most bacterial infections are cured with a single course of antibiotics.
The harder part is the conversation. Current and recent partners need to know so they can be tested and treated, otherwise reinfection is close to guaranteed and untreated chlamydia in particular causes long-term harm. The nurse can give you a written note about what was diagnosed and treated, which many people find easier to hand over than to explain.
Avoid sex until treatment is complete and any partner has been treated too — usually seven days after a single-dose treatment. If you are leaving Railay mid-course, take the full supply and the written record with you.
Frequently asked questions
How much does STD testing cost?
It depends how many infections are included. A single rapid test is inexpensive; a full screen costs more. You are given the price per test and for the panel before anything is taken.
How fast are the results?
Rapid HIV and syphilis results come back in about twenty minutes. Chlamydia, gonorrhoea and hepatitis are laboratory tests, usually one to three days.
Will anyone find out?
No. Results go only to you. Nothing is reported to resorts, employers, insurers or your home country.
Can I be tested without coming to the clinic?
Yes. A doctor resort visit can take samples in your room, which many people prefer on a peninsula this small.
Is it too soon to test?
Possibly, and it is far better to know that than to get a meaningless negative. Tell the nurse the date of the exposure and you will be advised exactly when each test becomes reliable.
Do I need to explain what happened?
Only enough to test the right things — roughly when, and what kind of contact. Nobody will ask for detail beyond what changes the testing, and nobody will comment on it.
