Health Check Up in Railay

On-site laboratory processing blood samples at the clinic in Railay

Long seasons have a way of postponing the ordinary things. If you have been on Railay for months — climbing, instructing, running a bar or a dive shop — a general check is easy to arrange without crossing to the mainland. A health check up in Railay covers the basics in one morning and gives you results you can take to any doctor in any country.

What a standard check includes

The core package covers the things that are common, silent and worth catching early:

  • Blood pressure, pulse, height, weight and oxygen saturation
  • Full blood count
  • Fasting blood glucose and HbA1c for diabetes
  • Cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Liver function
  • Kidney function
  • Urine analysis
  • A face-to-face review of every result with the nurse

Come first thing, and fast beforehand

Cholesterol and fasting glucose want eight to twelve hours without food, which in practice means no breakfast and an early appointment.

Drink water — it is allowed and it helps. Being dehydrated makes the blood draw harder and shifts kidney results in a way that looks worse than it is, which on a peninsula where everyone is mildly dehydrated most of the time is worth taking seriously.

Take your regular medication as usual unless told otherwise, and bring the boxes so everything is recorded accurately rather than approximately.

What a check finds, and what it does not

A blood panel is good at picking up diabetes, high cholesterol, anaemia, thyroid problems, liver strain and reduced kidney function. Those are common, usually silent until late, and respond well to being caught early.

It is not a cancer screen. It will not detect most cancers, and treating a normal panel as an all-clear for everything is the single most common misunderstanding about health checks. Screening for bowel, breast, cervical and prostate cancer is a separate, age-based process, and we can advise and refer.

The pattern we see in the seasonal crowd

There is a fairly consistent picture in people who have been here several months, and it is not the one you would expect from a population that climbs every day.

Raised liver enzymes and high triglycerides are common, because the social life runs on cheap alcohol and late nights while the exercise is anaerobic rather than cardiovascular. Iron deficiency turns up regularly in people eating a limited rotation of the same few cheap meals. And chronic mild dehydration is close to universal, which shows in kidney numbers.

Raised liver enzymes are not a disaster and are worth respecting rather than filing away. They frequently improve within weeks of cutting back, and a repeat test three months later shows honestly whether things are moving the right way.

Getting the results and what happens next

Most results are ready the same day, with anything specialised following in one to three days. You get a printed copy showing your values against the reference ranges, and the nurse goes through what each one means.

If something is out of range you are told what it means, whether it needs treating now, and when to repeat it. Where a specialist is needed we refer to a hospital in Krabi Town rather than leaving you to arrange it.

If you need documentation for a visa or work permit — which applies to a lot of the people who live here — see medical certificate, since the required blood work usually overlaps with a standard check and is worth combining into one visit.

How often is worth checking

For a healthy adult under forty with no symptoms and no family history, every two to three years is reasonable. Annual testing mostly generates anxiety rather than information.

Over forty, or with high blood pressure, diabetes, raised cholesterol, a significant family history or genuinely heavy drinking, annual makes sense. Where something has been found and is being managed, the nurse sets the interval — often three months initially, then stretching out once stable.

The most useful thing you can do is keep the reports. A single set of numbers says relatively little; the same numbers three years apart say a great deal, and that trend is what any doctor will want if something ever needs investigating — see blood tests for what can be run on the day.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a health check up cost?

It depends how many tests are in the panel. A basic screen is modestly priced; adding thyroid, hormones or extra markers increases it. You get an itemised quote before anything is drawn.

How long does it take?

About thirty to forty-five minutes at the clinic. Most results are back the same day and you can wait or return later to go through them.

Do I need to fast?

Yes, eight to twelve hours for accurate cholesterol and glucose. Water is fine and helps.

Can it be done at my accommodation?

Yes. A doctor resort visit can carry out the examination and take bloods, with results sent afterwards.

Will the results be accepted at home?

Yes. Results are issued in English with standard international reference ranges, so any doctor can read them without translation.

Should I worry if one value is slightly out of range?

Usually not. Reference ranges are defined so a proportion of healthy people fall outside them, and a hard day of climbing shifts several markers temporarily. The nurse looks at the pattern rather than a single figure.

A nurse-led clinic, part of the Takecare network

Takecare Clinic Railay is staffed by experienced English-speaking nurses, and works together with Doctor Ao Nang Takecare Medical Clinic in Ao Nang. The two clinics share doctors, records and treatment plans, so a doctor is involved whenever one is needed — reviewing a case, prescribing, or coming over to Railay — and care started on the peninsula continues without repetition if you cross to the mainland. It also means a second clinical opinion is a phone call away rather than a boat ride.
